BOOK OF KNOWLEDGE EXPLANATION

The meaning of knowledge in terms is knowing something according to its portion with the right understanding. As for Imam Bukhari (as well as other scholars) is the knowledge of syar'i, namely the knowledge of guidance and revelation that Allah sent down to His messenger. This knowledge is praised by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the Qur'an and by the Prophet in his hadith.
In understanding the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet , it must be understood by understanding and practicing the best three generations of this ummah from among the companions, tabi'in, and tabi'ut tabi'in. So that many scholars also define shar'i knowledge as what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the Qur'an, what the Prophet said in his sunnah, and what the companions of the Prophet understood about the Qur'an and Sunnah Rasulullah.
With shar'i knowledge, a person is declared as 'alim. As for science other than worldly knowledge, it is not included in the category of syar'i knowledge desired in the Qur'an and hadith. If the sentence of knowledge is mentioned in the Qur'an or hadith, then what is meant is shar'i knowledge and specifically the knowledge of the hadith of the Prophet .

Knowledge is divided into 2 in terms of usefulness:
1) Useful knowledge (knowledge that is praised), namely the knowledge of the Qur'an, the Sunnah of the Prophet, the explanations of the Companions that bring the owner to always have fear (khosyah) of Allah and bring the owner to love what Allah loves, love whoever is loved by Allah, and hate anything and whoever is hated by Allah and His Messenger.
This is the knowledge referred to by Allah in Surah Fathir verse 28: "Only those who have a fear (khosyah) of Allah from among His servants are people who are knowledgeable ('ulama)".
2) Knowledge that is not useful (science that is despicable). What causes this knowledge is not useful for 2 reasons, namely because the essence of knowledge itself is not useful and even endangers its owner. Examples are sorcery, witchcraft, shamanism, fortune-telling, pellets, and the like. This is as Allah says in Surah al Baqarah verse 102: "... and they learned from Harut and Marut knowledge that could separate a man and his wife. ... And they learned knowledge that harms them and does not benefit them. ."
Another example is the knowledge of philosophy, knowledge of kalam, or knowledge of mantiq which makes people become stressed and crazy when studying these knowledge.
The second reason that knowledge is not useful is because of its owner, not because of its knowledge. The knowledge possessed is authentic, namely the knowledge of the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet , as well as the understanding of the companions. But it becomes useless because the perpetrators do not want to practice this knowledge. In fact, he made the knowledge as a tool to achieve worldly things only.
This is as explained by Allah in Surah al Jumu'ah regarding the Jews: "The example of those who carry the Torah and then they do not practice what is in it is like a donkey carrying a book."
It is also explained in Surah Al A'raf verses 175-176: Read (O Prophet) to them (the polytheists) news about someone to whom we used to give our verses. Then he is released (with a release that is impossible to return) from that knowledge. So in the end he was followed by the devil. So he became a misguided person. Had we so wished, we would have raised his dignity with our verses. However, he entered the earth (infected by the disease of love of the world) and followed his desires (syubhat-syubhat and heresy). So for example, people like this are like dogs. If you hold the dog, it sticks out its tongue. Or if you let him stick out his tongue."
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jauziyyah rahimahullah in his book al-Fawaid explained about the condition of a dog that always sticks out its tongue in various circumstances, the meaning is that because the person has been infected with the disease of doubt and lust, then he is no longer willing to accept advice from anyone.
So it is obligatory for us to learn useful knowledge (syar'i knowledge) and practice it as best we can. The knowledge learned is used to lift ignorance, to worship Allah as well as possible, and to guide people to the right path with full advice and honesty.
